Buy Your Spring Fair Wristbands!

If you’ve been to Spring Fair before, you know that individual ride tickets are usually 50 cents each, and that each ride costs up to four tickets. While you’ll be able to buy tickets at Spring Fair this year on May 26, we’ve introduced an all-access wristband for $25 for those who want to ride and play all day without keeping track of tickets. Wristbands will be on sale until May 23 (they won’t be sold at Spring Fair!), so click here to get yours soon:

Bag2School Wants Your Old Textiles

The Jackman eco team will be hosting a Bag2School event at Jackman on Wednesday, May 9. Bag2School is an organization working to divert textiles (clothing, towels, drapes, etc.) from the landfill by collecting them to reuse and recycle. On May 9, drop off your used textiles in front the school in bags between 8 am and 10 am, and we’ll collect them to be picked up by Bag2School. Reduce unused or unwanted textile items in your home, while reducing the environmental impact that comes from throwing these items out! April Update for Fields of Dream

The Strategic Planning Committee is excited to share some new Field of Dreams news! We had our first master plan meeting with the TDSB and landscape architect on April 12 at the school. The design consultant, field expert, senior manager of sustainability, our principal and members of the steering committee were also present.

We discussed the ideas and priorities that you and the students provided through our consultation process last year. At this meeting, the conversation also centered on how the site is currently being used, and we stepped outside for a look at how the children use the schoolyard. The landscape architect will incorporate the ideas in a rough plan with details for further discussion and input at our next meeting on May 10.

We will have a total of four meetings with the TDSB in order to create a wonderful, detailed master plan drawing of the schoolyard.

Planning for Jackman’s annual Spring Fair is kicking into gear. This is an important (and fun!) school fundraising event, and we can’t do it without lots of dedicated volunteers. Maple Syrup update

Wow!   What an incredible season for making maple syrup!   The trees at Jackman have been very generous this year.   And the temperatures have been ‘just right’.  Below zero degrees Celcius in the nighttime, above zero in the daytime.   We’ve collected more than 350 L of maple sap this year.  That’s a new record by far.   (Last year, we collected 215L).

 
Well, it’s time to transform all this sap into… maple syrup.   Mark your calendars.   We’ll be ‘sugaring’ at Jackman on Monday, March 26.   We will be boiling the sap down at school throughout the whole day to make maple syrup. 
 
Actually, Darwin is already ‘sugaring’ in his backyard, so we’ll have some syrup ready for tasting.  And a number of Jackman parent volunteers are making lots of small pancakes to pair with the freshly made syrup.   Yep, that’s right.  There will be pancakes for EVERYONE!   Yeah!!!!  
 
Please drop by Jackman on Sugaring Day and see the maple syrup making in action and sample this sweet treat.   We’re excited about providing Jackman kids with this unique ‘outdoor education’ experience. Please see the full post and all the pictures here.

Raising children can be challenging at the best of times, especially when confronted with intense emotions. Research shows that when parents validate their children’s concerns, it can help reduce children’s anxiety, levels of stress and improve parent child relationships.
Jackman School Council’s Equity and Diversity Committee is pleased to offer you a chance to learn practical techniques to manage those difficult moments with an experienced child and family therapist from Sick Kids Community Mental Health, Liz Lovrics.
Liz’s session will cover:
-what is validation
-how to and when to validate
how to use effective problem solving with your child

Join Jackman Day at the Marlies! Tickets purchase due March 19th

Calling all hockey fans! Jackman families are invited to attend the Toronto Marlies game on Saturday, March 24 at 4:00 pm. We’ve secured discounted tickets and seats together for what should be an exciting day out with your fellow Jackman friends. Students will be able to cheer on the Marlies and show their spirit – so don’t forget to wear your yellow Jackman T-shirts.

This event is a school fundraiser and proceeds from ticket sales will go towards parent council initiatives. To get your tickets, complete the form that went home with your child(ren) and return it back with payment to the school by next Monday, March 19. Thank You MVPs!!!!

Jackman’s first ever MVP (most valuable parents) night was Feb 22nd at school. We had an amazing turn out with more than 150 parents coming out to celebrate each other and have fun. We enjoyed amazing local food and drinks, and were entertained by a great DJ, tarot card readings and a photo booth. The silent auction was a huge success! Thank you to all those who donated items – we had more than 90 items and all were purchased! To see the sponsor list thank you, see here.

Overall the event raised over $15,000 for the Field of Dreams. Thank you all so much for your support!! We look forward to seeing you next year.
