Field Of Dreams December Update

Field Of Dreams December Update

Hi all, here is our December update from Field of Dreams project.
The Viability Review Participatory Design (VRPD) was submitted to the TDSB in June, 2017.  The topographical survey will be done shortly. We have been told we will have a Masterplan created by June 2018.  We are excited that this major project for Jackman has been so well received, and we will do everything to ensure it moves along in a timely fashion.

Please see the following document for all the details.

Collect Your Cookie Dough Orders on Dec. 7

Thank you to everyone who placed orders for cookie dough. This initiative gives us an opportunity to help a sister school by sharing some of our fundraising proceeds. We’re currently working with our school superintendent to determine which school would benefit most. In the meantime, cookie dough orders will be available for pickup on Thursday, December 7 in the school’s general purpose room. Happy baking!

 It’s Jackman Raffle Time!

All Jackman students will be sent home this week with tickets for the Jackman raffle. Each child will receive two bundles of 10 tickets each, which can be sold until December 14. Tickets are $2 each, and each provides one entry into a draw that will take place during the holiday concert for prizes of $3,000, $2,000 and $1,000. Please ensure that envelopes including sold ticket stubs, money and any unsold tickets are dropped off at the school office. Thank you in advance for your help and support with this important fundraising initiative, which helps fund important education programs such as Scientists in School and Prologue to the Performing Arts.

Next Pizza Lunch is Dec. 6 – Volunteer to Help!

Our next pizza lunch is coming up next Wednesday, December 6. If you haven’t already placed an order for this or future pizza lunches, you can do so online at https://munchalunch.com/schools/JackmanAvenue.

Pizza lunches are entirely parent-powered! That means we need you to help serve pizza in your children’s classrooms. All Jackman community members who would like to volunteer for pizza lunch can sign up online at http://signup.com/go/poPGRUG. The system lists all classrooms and indicates which are in need of volunteers. Just click on the signup button for your child’s classroom and fill in the requested info.

2017-2018 Jackman School Council Budget

2017-2018 Jackman School Council Budget

Reference document:
2017-18 School Council Budget (Nov06).

We finished last year with a significant turn around of a troubling fundraising trend, and we’re starting this one with more of the same good news. Our interim results show that pizza lunch looks set to post another record, Harvest Fest came in with its strongest year and we’re raising more money than before with our own Jackman Gear. So, thank you very much for your incredible generosity!

It’d be fair to say that we have what it takes to make a difference for this year and beyond. As you’ll see in this year’s approved budget, we are increasing our support for our kids education in a wholistic way. The plan is to invest a total of $39,000 in a combination of (i) access to technology (as per Mr. Sullivan and Ms. Papadopoulos direction and the results of the parent survey), (ii) extras for classrooms, (iii) additional programs for math and sciences (IXL, Scientists in School), (iv) support for languages (RAZ Kids, A-Z Reading), (v) art and culture (Prologue to the Performing Arts) and, for the first time in years, (vi) a significant investment into physical education supplies.

In fact, we’ll be calling for help from the parent community to think out-of-the-box and see what other activities and programs we could roll out from Council to further enhance our kids’ education. Stay tuned in the weeks to come!

We also voted on a budget for each of our Council committees. In order not to steal their show, I’ll let them speak for themselves. But if you’d like to have an wholistic picture of what they are all planning, let us know and we’ll forward that information.

I’ll make an exception to that, as the $20,000 we penciled in for Strategic Planning is indeed quite significant. This is money that, if available at the end of the year, we’d like designate to the “field of dreams” – a redesign of our outdoors area to which everyone is welcome to contribute ideas. This is an expensive multi-year project for which we’ll be needing to raise well over $100,000 as we finalize the master plan and go through the stipulated TDSB process. This year’s allocation is to start “pre-funding” or, more colloquially, we’re just getting ready for the big bill!

All and all, we are forecasting net fundraising for $71,500 and expenses of c.$79,700. The shortfall of just over $8,000 can be easily managed with the available balance coming from last year. At this time, I do not foresee any significant cashflow difficulties – although some of the money we’ve raised in the past is restricted to certain uses, and that may, if there are surprises, put a little pressure towards the end of the year.

Think of it as a way to keep you engaged in our finances and what Council is up to! As always, we invite all parents to the monthly meetings. Recall that we have childcare available if needed, and above all, that all ideas and opinions are truly welcome!

Come to Harvest Fest This Friday!

Join us for our annual Jackman Harvest Fest on Friday, October 27 in support of the school’s gardens & eco-initiatives, to celebrate the start of the new school year and the harvest season!

We welcome everyone to dance, eat chili, hotdogs and baked treats, drink fresh squeezed lemonade, bob for apples, bring halloween costumes to swap, buy your pumpkins and celebrate at this festive social community event. You’ll also get the chance to meet your school council members as they serve chili & hot dogs!.

We need your help!

Starting tomorrow, in preparation for Harvest Fest we’ll be working with classes to make scarecrows at the front of the school. If you feel like helping, please come out and join in the fun!

You can also help us by:

  • Make some delicious (nut free) treats for our bake sale
  • Make a crock pot of chilli to share at Harvest Fest
  • Donate books for our book sale or items (costumes, active gear, sport, dance, skates, boots, etc) for our free-cycle; You can drop donation items in the school foyer
  • Setting up or cleaning up on the day of Harvest Fest

We’re raising money to support reconciliation efforts!
We’re pleased to share that half of any proceeds from Harvest Fest will be donated to the Gord Downie Chanie Wenjack Fund in support of reconciliation between Indigenous & Non-Indigenous Peoples, to reinforce our commitment to equity for all.

October 10 to 13 is Walk to School Week!

October 10 to 13 is Walk to School Week!

Fall is a season made for walking: The air is cool and fresh, the leaves are turning amazing colours, and the ones that fall on the ground make cool crunching sounds when you step on them. So it’s fitting that next week is Walk to School Week!

From October 10 to 13, we’re encouraging Jackman students, parents and guardians to walk to school every day. And we’re not just talking the talk… we’re walking the walk by making walking fun and rewarding. Each morning, a different surprise will await those who get to school a bit early – stickers, chalk art, snacks and even a dance party.

Check out this post on the Jackman School Eco Team Blog for more details. And plan to give your feet a workout during Walk to School Week!
